Charles and I both board Bus 243 to get home from The Modern Pantry. I went to Waitrose while he was finishing his shift and he joined me there then we could take the bus together. Charles bought three pints of pineapple juice to cook an African dish of rice. Thus I asked him to bring me a portion tomorrow.
In London, Charles is the Kitchen Porter. Charles is from Ghana. Charles does not talk too much. We don’t know him. He lives somewhere in East London, probably in a tiny flat as everybody does.
In Ghana, Charles has a Mansion, a big house where his family lives presently. Charles owns a cocoa farm and a shop which are managed by people working for him. From the money he earns from these businesses, he gives a part to his family and a part to charities.
Charles invited me to go to Ghana in September:
“If you come with me you could see everything! You could see the water that goes like that – Pshh... Psh... – from the mountain, the monkeys, you could see the zoo.
If you’d go to Ghana, you could come back to the work and say that Charles is a Big Man, Charles is not what they think...”
